How to improve the “emotional soup”

Have you ever eaten something and try to figure out what ingredients are in it?

Well, in counseling, we sometimes do something similar with exploring the feelings and “emotional soup” that people are experiencing.

Often it’s not just one feeling but a number of feelings mixed together in an “emotional soup”. Sometimes it’s a good tasting soup. Sometimes it’s horrible. I wonder if you can relate.

Being able to defuse from that, hold space for that with curiosity, acknowledge that, appreciate that, process that, figure out the underlying key “ingredients”, and then take action to improve that, are all important steps.

We may end up with a better tasting soup.

Without knowing the ingredients, it’s hard to improve that isn’t it?
