Helping our patients to explore the “Window of acceptance and influence”

Language is nuanced and is difficult at times. Certain words can invoke certain feelings and emotions in some individuals and not others. This may be helpful or unhelpful.

I really like the concept of the “Window of tolerance” when used in counseling work.

But I do wonder about the word “tolerance”.  It seems to imply a sense of struggle and “putting up with it”.  There can be excessive stressing and straining with that.

Alternatively, consider exploring the “Window of acceptance and influence” perhaps.

The more we can let go of the “unfixable”, and have the skills to change the “fixable”, the bigger our “window” or range of functioning.
