Helping self sacrificers to have better self care first


In counseling, we see many “self sacrificers” who hold tightly onto the belief that self care first equals selfishness. This may then lead to feelings of guilt.

First step is awareness.

Then acknowledge.

Then defusion, unhooking, hold lightly, and making room/space for these thoughts, feelings and beliefs.

Then remind oneself that oxygen/air mask first so that we can look after many others.

Selfishness is when oxygen/air mask first and then just sit there.

It’s not the same thing.....
