I have patients with such vivid memories like playing a video inside their heads and then, reliving and fusing with it. It can be a very difficult experience for them, and often, the more they try to block it out, reason or argue with it, the more hooked into that narrative and “movie scene” they are.
In order to defuse or unhook from that “movie scene”, they have to step back as a “director” if their “life movie” rather than the main character of that movie.
From the meta perspective of the “director”, they are more able to change the scene, the theme, the color contrast, the picture quality, the screen size, the music score, the sounds, and the overall experience or “feel” of that scene or memory.
I hope you know what I mean.
