Helping our patients to activate a bigger feeling than fear to overcome fear

I often think about my parents and their escape from Vietnam in 1980. I was only 7 at the time.

We had 4 failed attempts.

I wondered how they overcame their fears at the time because they are actually quite conservative, anxious, and risk averse people.

The answer is probably in the love for their children, freedom and autonomy. These are very strong values for them.

So what have I learnt?

Sometimes to overcome the feeling of fear, one has to use a “bigger feeling/value” to “hold or wrap up” that fear.
