Self care for Family Doctors so that we can be more effective at looking after others

Being a Family Doctor reminds me a lot about being like MacGyver in the 80s TV show.

We work with whatever we have, wear many hats, and creative in our solutions.

A Teacher
A Coaches
A helper
Listener
Adviser
Scientist
Counselor
Surgeon
Physician
Social worker
Support worker
Sometime “parenting role”
Rescuer
Moral compass
Anchor during a storm
Too many things to list.....

We literally have an open license to do almost anything that is related to health. I don’t think we will ever be unemployed.

I think we as a collective, can be proud of that despite what some others might think or judge from time to time. We can’t really control what others think and judge too much. Of course, fix what can fix, fight what we can fight, and let go of the things that we can’t. It’s not energy efficient trying to change the things that we have little or no control over.

You know your worth, I know, we know. That may be enough “for now”. I do acknowledge that it is frustrating when we are undervalued though.

Having said that, the irony is, when we come from a space of “we know who we are”, and “we are proud of who we are”, and zooming on what matters, we will be in a better position to change things.
