Non-judging listening and supportive counseling are not the same as “just a chat”

I am a little “obsessed” with reminding my Registrars that non-judging listening and supportive counseling are to provide our patients with 3 very important human needs. It’s not “just a chat”.

It provides our patients with the...

1. Need for security and safety, and a safe haven to externalize their thoughts and feelings for defusion from their narrative.

2. Need for connection with another being

3. Need for growth and learning

Where else can people access those?

The wonderful thing is, our Registrars are generally very capable of doing this already.

Is it easy work? No
Is it important? Yes
