Helping our patients to be a “surfer”, not a “fighter”

Life is full of joys but also many difficult moments, and with moments like those, we can remind ourselves and our patients that life is like an ocean of waves. Never really a dull moment. Sometimes, it’s calm. Sometimes stormy seas. Sometimes even a tsunami.

When faced with stormy seas or a Tsunami, we cannot fight it. We cannot run away from it. We cannot even avoid it. But we can ride the waves and “surf it”.

“Struggling” and fighting our way through small waves are fine. It doesn’t work well for a large wave. Instead, embrace it, and “surf it”.

When faced with stormy seas, be a surfer, not a “fighter”. It’s less exhausting that way.
