Helping our patients accept what is IS

Often patients struggle a bit with the “acceptance” part of Acceptance Commitment Therapy.

They may question why do they have to accept something that is unfair or unjust.

Acceptance is not “acceptance forever”.

It’s an acceptance of what is IS for now in order to have the mental space to make the next “value based” move. It reduces the risk of being stuck and bogged down in the fight, flight, or freeze response. If chronically stuck, it may burn us out.

Change what we can and accept what we can’t in this moment.

A little bit like the OSCE exam stations isn’t it?
