When the history and agenda is a bit unclear, what should you do?

Have you ever seen a patient who was a difficult historian and felt confused as to what their agenda was?  What question or questions should you ask in order to clarify things.

Something that really works well for me is this.

Consider asking.....

"What were you hoping to achieve from today?"
"What is your expectation of today?"


These questions help us to target the patient's agenda and help us to address it.  If you do not address the patient's agenda, then the patient is not going to be happy.
